RABAT (AFP) – The Moroccan government warned Thursday it would take a tough line against proselytisers two days after 20 foreign Christian missionaries were expelled.

Communications Minister Khalid Naciri said the government would be "severe with all those who play with religious values".

The Christians were expelled after religious authorities accused them of proselytism, illegal in the North African majority Sunni-Muslim country.

CAIRO (AFP) – Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak's health is "satisfactory" after surgery in Germany to remove a gall bladder, the head of the medical team at Heidelberg University Hospital said on Thursday.

"President Hosni Mubarak's overall medical condition continues to improve in a satisfactory manner," Professor Markus Buechler said in a statement released by Egyptian authorities.

EU observers say confident of monitoring Sudan elections (AFP) E-mail Print PDF

KHARTOUM (AFP) – European Union election observers in Sudan said on Thursday they are confident of being able to detect any irregularities in next month's multiparty polls, the country's first since 1986.

The European Union's mission comprises 138 observers, 58 of whom are already in Sudan, with another 80 to arrive just before the legislative, regional and presidential elections slated to take place from April 11 to 13.

MOGADISHU (AFP) – Somali government forces backed by African Union troops raided Islamist rebel positions in Mogadishu Thursday, sparking a heavy fire exchange which killed more than 20 civilians and injured scores.

The attack, in a northern Mogadishu district, came a day after the government forces were ambushed by the rebels in the same area, resulting in the death of at least 23 civilians.

BERLIN (Reuters) – Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak had benign tissue removed during an operation in Germany and his overall condition continues to improve, according to a Heidelberg University Hospital medical bulletin on Thursday.

Mubarak, 81, had successful gallbladder surgery on Saturday and was released from the intensive care unit on Wednesday.

 

Libya demands diplomatic concessions from Swiss (AP) E-mail Print PDF

GENEVA – A Libyan official called on Switzerland to make concessions in the ongoing diplomatic dispute between the countries, saying Thursday that a travel ban on leader Moammar Gadhafi was a "big humiliation" to the African country.

The remarks by Libya's acting U.N. ambassador in Geneva downplayed hopes that a compromise could be reached.
